Long ago, in the ancient city of Mithila, ruled a wise and just king named Nimi. His reign was marked by peace and prosperity, and his people loved him dearly. King Nimi was renowned not only for his fairness but also for his deep devotion to the Dharma. He spent his days dispensing justice, performing meritorious deeds, and contemplating the nature of existence.
One day, as King Nimi meditated, a celestial being, the god Sakka, appeared before him. Sakka, the king of the gods, was impressed by Nimi’s virtuous life and his unwavering commitment to righteousness. He descended from his heavenly abode with a proposition: “O King Nimi,” Sakka said, his voice resonating with divine grace, “your merit is vast. I offer you a boon. You may choose to rule your kingdom for another thousand years, or you may ascend to my celestial realm and enjoy the fruits of your good karma for an equal span.”
King Nimi, ever thoughtful, did not immediately accept or refuse. He pondered the offer deeply. He looked at his kingdom, the people he had sworn to protect, the responsibilities he held. He also considered the glorious heavenly world Sakka described, a realm of unparalleled beauty and eternal joy. After much deliberation, he replied, “O Sakka, your offer is generous. However, I have a question. If I choose to remain here and rule, will I be able to continue practicing the Dharma and accumulating merit as I do now? Will my earthly duties hinder my spiritual progress?”
Sakka smiled. “Indeed, King Nimi. As long as you remain righteous and uphold the Dharma, your path to enlightenment will remain open. Your earthly reign, when guided by virtue, can be as potent a spiritual training ground as any heavenly realm.”
King Nimi then made his choice. “I choose to remain here, O Sakka,” he declared. “My duty is to my people, and I wish to continue serving them with a righteous heart. The true joy lies not in passive enjoyment, but in active compassion and the pursuit of wisdom, even amidst the challenges of worldly life.”
Sakka was deeply impressed by King Nimi’s wisdom and selflessness. “Your choice is a testament to your profound understanding, King Nimi. You have chosen the path of service and continuous growth. May your reign be ever blessed.” With these words, Sakka disappeared, leaving King Nimi to continue his noble rule.
Years turned into decades, and decades into centuries. King Nimi, true to his word, continued to rule with unwavering integrity. He established hospitals, built charitable institutions, and ensured that justice was dispensed impartially to all, regardless of their station in life. He never wavered in his commitment to the Dharma, finding joy in the simple act of living virtuously and helping others. His kingdom flourished, becoming a beacon of peace and righteousness.
As King Nimi grew old, his body weakened, but his spirit remained as strong as ever. He had lived a life of purpose, a life dedicated to the welfare of others and the pursuit of truth. When his time finally came, he passed away peacefully, his heart filled with contentment. His reign was a legendary example of how one could live a life of profound spiritual merit while fulfilling one’s worldly duties. The story of King Nimi became a timeless tale, inspiring countless generations to choose the path of righteous service over fleeting pleasures.
